Why we need your help

For over three centuries, bells have formed an important part of the life of St Magnus church and contributed to the life of the City of London, but for the last sixty years this historic tower has remained silent. We now need your help to raise £250,000 to provide St Magnus with a ring of bells. Such a ring will:

 ·          Reinstate a long lost part of the City’s heritage

The tower of St Magnus has contained bells since before the Great Fire of 1666. It has been empty for the past sixty years, depriving the City an important piece of its cultural heritage, particularly as these were bells that used to sing across the River Thames. Once in place, there is no reason why the new bells should not ring out from the belfry for another 500 years. Whoever contributes to this appeal will leave a legacy, not just for one generation, but for many generations to come.

 ·          Be an important part of the ministry and worship of St Magnus

The bells at St Magnus have played an important part of the worship in this church, particularly as the church is of a high churchmanship and a tradition of excellence in music. As well as reminding passers by of the ministry of the church, the sound of bells traditionally encourages visitors into the building and to worship.

 ·          Promote the ancient art of bellringing

The very English art form of change ringing has been associated with the life of the City of London for many centuries. Reinstating bells in St Magnus will ensure that a tradition dating back many centuries is continued, greatly adding to the atmosphere of the City, which makes it such a popular destination for tourists.

 ·          Create a training ground for bellringing

The City of London possesses a number of rings of twelve bells, none of which are particularly suitable instruments on which to train ringers. The proposed ring of bells at St Magnus will be somewhat lighter than those in other towers. This will make the St Magnus bells more manageable than any other ring of bells in the City, thus making the teaching of ringers much more effective and thereby enhancing the collective ability of bellringers in the City.
